Tony Alonso

Dubbed the voice of a new generation in church music, Tony Alonso is one of the most preeminent voices in contemporary liturgical music. Tony's music reflects an understanding of the multicultural needs of the contemporary Church as well as a commitment to strong ritual music. In addition to five published collections of liturgical music with GIA Publications (Chicago, Illinois), Tony's music appears in several compilations and hymnals throughout North America.

A graduate of Northwestern University with a degree in choral conducting, Tony currently serves as the Director of Music for the Campus Minsitry Team at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.

Donna Anderle

AnderleDonna Anderle is an accomplished dancer, teacher and choreographer. Donna artfully weaves together elements of Scripture, ritual and liturgical movement. She believes that the beauty of dance is an effective medium for finding oneness with God and for healing the soul. Donna has performed and choreographed dance programs for national and regional liturgical conferences for many years. Currently she is assistant to the campus minister and director of liturgical movement and dance at the Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati, Ohio. She holds a degree in theatre arts and English from Drake University.

Tom Booth

BoothTom Booth is an incredibly gifted composer and musician, Tom has written songs that are known throughout the country. He has collaborated with many popular Christian artists: Kathy Troccoli, Rich Mullins, Amy Grant and many others. Both his solo projects and his collaborations have garnered numerous Dove, Unity and Grammy awards and nominations.

Presently, Tom is touring with friend and mentor John Michael Talbot, and performing concerts, workshops and missions on his own as well. He produces recordings for other artists and is a member of the Artists & Repertoire team at spiritandsong.com. Tom’s continuing work with spiritandsong.com promises to bring new recordings, concerts and other events.

Monica Brown

BrownMonica Brown, from Sydney Australia, is an internationally acclaimed Christian composer and workshop facilitator, who visits the USA frequently, working throughout the States, as well as The UK, Ireland and Australia in the areas of spirituality, liturgy and religious education and the integration of the arts. Her music for children and adults is used widely in religious communities, schools and parishes, and is touching the hearts of people throughout the world.

Rosie Papion Brown

PBrownRosie Papion Brown resides in Lafayette, LA, after evacuating from Hurricane Katrina. Through Volunteers of America, she provides crisis counseling and outreach to Katrina and Rita survivors in the Lafayette area. Rosie received her Marketing degree from Xavier University and her Masters of Arts in Theology from Notre Dame Seminary. Rosie has been on faculty at the high school and diocesan levels and for the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University, where she also coordinated the Youth Ministry Certification and Enrichment program. Her ministries include program and leadership development, facilitation, and training in the areas of catechesis, youth ministry, social ministry, community organizing, and organizational planning. She has been a Regional and National speaker. Rosie is the National Consultant for Black Catechesis for Harcourt Religion Publishers and is also an adjunct staff member for the Center for Ministry Development in the Young Neighbors in Action program.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Bios

Bibi Qamar

Bibi Qamar joined CRS in 2002 as a Project Officer in CRS Kandahar where she focused on women’s community mobilization, women’s empowerment and vocational training for women.  In July 2004 she joined CRS Herat as the Project Officer on the Agroenterprise Support Program.  In this capacity Bibi worked to collect market data on various agricultural products, she established 6 women’s food processing enterprises and established strong partnership with a local NGO for training and support to women’s programs.  In early 2006, Bibi began working exclusively in the Women’s Programming Unit in Herat.  This unit works to ensure quality women’s programs throughout CRS in western Afghanistan.  Bibi has worked to adapt the India Self Help Group methodology in Afghanistan and has further helped women’s groups to start up small enterprises including cosmetic soap production, wool yarn production and others.   Bibi’s creativity and motivation have led to the expansion and strength of the CRS Women’s Programs.  In recognition of her contributions and potential, Bibi was promoted to Assistant Program Manager for Women’s Programs in November, 2006. 

Before coming to CRS, Bibi Qamar completed high school at Helper High School in Quetta Pakistan and completed 2 years of homeopathic medical education in Karachi Pakistan.  Bibi Qamar is from Kandahar Afghanistan.

Sara Bowers

Sara Bowers joined CRS in July, 2004 as an International Development Fellow with CRS India, where she focused on program documentation and growth in disaster management, trafficking, education, and other sectors. She moved to CRS Afghanistan, Kabul office in May, 2005 to manage CRS’s accelerated learning, early childhood development, and other education programs in Central Afghanistan as the Education Program Manager.  Under Sara’s leadership CRS expanded its education activities into Western Afghanistan in early 2006.  With this expansion Sara’s responsibilities also increased.  She is now the Head of Education Programs for CRS Afghanistan, with a new focus on community-based education strategies and policy. A portion of her time is spent supporting program development in CRS South Asia as Regional Technical Advisor for Education.  

Before coming to CRS, Sara completed her MALD in humanitarian aid and development at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts, where she focused on children’s issues. Previously, Sara worked in special education in California and with street children in Zimbabwe. She also worked for Global Education Partnership, supporting village-based school projects in East Africa and Central America. Sara is from Portland, Oregon.

Ted Miles

Ted Miles has worked for Catholic Relief Services since July 2005, serving as a relationship manager for religious education and co-coordinator of the agency’s youth strategy program.  A native of Baltimore, MD, Ted holds a BA in Psychology from Loyola College and an MA in Psychology from Bucknell University.  His Jesuit influence led to a two year Jesuit Volunteer position in education and youth ministry in Belize and Guatemala, Central America in the late 1980’s.  Since, Ted has served in parish ministry, Catholic high school education and archdiocesan leadership development for the past fifteen years.  His work includes the development of an urban immersion experience rooted in Catholic Social Teaching for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, presentation at numerous conferences regionally and nationally, and international travel with the Archdiocese of Baltimore Haiti Project and Catholic Relief Services.

Father Anthony Ciorra

CiorraFr. Anthony Ciorra was ordained a priest in 1973. His experience has included parish life, teaching, administration, retreat work, preaching, and formation ministries. He has graduate degrees in psychology, history and pastoral theology and a Certificate in Spiritual Direction. He has a Ph.D. in Theology from Fordham University. His publications include Everyday Mvsticism, (Crossroad, 1995), a work about spirituality in the marketplace and Moral Formation in the Parish (Alba House 1999), a book about living Christian and moral values in the world. In recognition for his work and ministry, he was given the pontifical honor Pro Eccelsia et Pontifice by Pope John Paul in 1999. Father is currently Dean of the Graduate School of Religion and Religious Education at Fordham University. Previously he was Professor of Theology, Director of the Center of Theological and Spiritual Development at the College of St. Elizabeth. He is the weekend Associate at St. Vincent Martyr Parish, Madison, NJ. He gives workshops and retreats throughout the United States, the Middle East and Europe. He is actively involved in creating programs for inter-religious dialogue among Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

Cyprian Consiglio

ConsiglioCamaldolese Benedictine Father Cyprian Consiglio is a nationally known singer, composer, recording artist and speaker. During his more than 10 years at New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur, California, he has served as choirmaster and liturgist and has been involved in formation work and teaching.

Cyprian is known for his soulful voice and use of many musical styles to express sacred themes. Cyprian specializes in concerts for people of all ages. He performs solo, with just guitar accompaniment, and with percussionist John Pennington, who specializes in hand drumming and world music. Cyprian is also available on a limited basis for conferences and retreats.

Rory Cooney

CooneyRory Cooney is the director of music and liturgy at St. Anne Catholic Community in Barrington, Illinois. In addition, he gives concerts and workshops on liturgical music, and works on initiation and reconciliation institutes with the North American Forum on the Catechumenate.

His compositions, represented on a dozen recordings with three publishers, appear in a wide variety of hymnals and missalettes, including We Celebrate and Voices as One. His most recent collection is Christ the Icon, published in 2005 by World Library Publications.

In 2006 Rory was honored by receiving a Unity Award from the United Catholic Music and Video Association (UCMVA) for Sacramental Song of the Year - his MASS OF ST. AIDAN!

Jaime Cortez

CortezJaime Cortez is a gifted and popular composer, arranger and performer. Born in New York and raised in El Salvador, Jaime is fluent in Spanish and has dedicated a portion of his ministry to promoting better Hispanic liturgies and bringing cultures together for worship.

His main instrument is guitar, although he is proficient in piano and other string instruments, such as charango, vihuela and bass guitar. In addition to workshops, Jaime gives concerts with both English and Spanish repertoire, alone or with volunteer groups. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music composition from Arizona State University.

Jaime is currently music director at St. Bridget Church in Mesa, Arizona. He lives in Mesa, Arizona, with his wife, Kari, and three children.

Michael Downey

DowneyDr. Michael Downey is a lay teacher, consultant and author. He also has a vocation to be a husband and a father. Chris de Silva

SilvaChris de Silva is originally from Singapore and lives in Los Angeles, California. He is the Director of Music Ministry at St. Brendan Catholic Church and School. Chris studied Composition with an emphasis in Film Scoring at the University of Southern California with Morten Lauridsen, Donald Crockett, David Raksin and Christopher Young. In 1993, Chris performed at workshops and liturgies during World Youth Day in Denver, Colorado with El Coro de Los Angeles, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Bilingual Choir. Since then, he has ministered at Archdiocesan events and USCCB conferences. Chris also performs annually at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress in Anaheim, California.

Tom East

Steven Ellair

EllairSteven Ellair has been involved in catechetical ministry for over 17 years. A former Parish Catechist, Youth Minister, and Catholic school teacher, he most recently served as the Consultant for Elementary Catechesis in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for over eight years. Steven is currently a Senior Editor with RCL and continues speaking and writing nationally on issues related to catechesis.

Mark Friedman

FriedmanMark Friedman has been a liturgist, cantor and music director for more than 20 years. He is composer, with Janet Vogt, of four collections of music for young people published by OCP. Mark and Janet Vogt were named the 2005 Co-Music Educators of the Year by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians’ Music Education Division. Mark presents workshops, concerts and keynotes around the country, including the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress, NCEA and NPM. Currently Mark is a music minister and liturgist at St. John Fisher Parish in Cincinnati.

Marty Haugen

HaugenMarty Haugen is a liturgical composer, workshop presenter, performing and recording artist & author from Eagan,

For the past 25 years, Marty has presented hundreds of workshops and concerts across North and Central America, Europe, Asia and the Pacific Rim. He has over 30 recordings and more than 400 separate printed editions available through GIA Publications. He has a number of published mass settings for Roman Catholic communities (including Mass of Creation) and a number of communion settings for Lutheran congregations (including Now the Feast and Celebration).

Marty has served as an editor or consultant to a number of GIA hymnals and has been a contributor to hymnals or supplements for many denominational groups including the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America), United Methodists, the Mennonite Brethren, the United Church of Christ, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the United Church of Canada, the Church of England, the Church of Scotland and Roman Catholic groups in Great Britain, Canada and Australia.

Father John Hurley

HurleyFather John Hurley is a Paulist and was ordained by Cardinal Terence Cooke in 1977. He graduated from Catholic University with a BA in Religious Education, a Master of Divinity degree from the Washington Theological Union and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley.

He served as founding director of the Paulist Center for Catholic Evangelization in Portland, Oregon from 1978-1984, Director of Development for the Paulists from 1984 until 1991 when he was appointed Pastor of historic Old St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco. In 1997, he was appointed to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, DC. where he served as Executive Director of the Secretariat for Evangelization. Fr. Hurley was a consultant to the Bishops’ Committees on Jubilee 2000, Encuentro 2000, and Catechesis and, is a member of the Paulist Fathers’ General Council. His insights also brought about the North American Institute for Catholic Evangelization for diocesan and national leadership which was held in 2003 and 2006. In April of 2005, after eight years at the USCCB, he was appointed Assistant to the President for Strategic Planning for the Paulist Fathers, a community whose primary mission is evangelization. In June, 2006, Fr. Hurley became the founding Director of the Paulist North American Office for Reconciliation and will continue to speak before national and diocesan leadership in most of the dioceses across the country.

Meredith Dean Joseph

JosephMeredith Dean Joseph is the Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Joseph's Parish in East Rutherford, NJ.

Meredith's first CD, "What's Goin' On!", received rave reviews. Her association with World Library Publications (WLP) began in 1995 as a featured soloist on John Angotti's recordings of "Come Follow Me", "On This Journey", "Rise Up My People" and "Common Ground". Meredith had the pleasure of working with the late Leon Roberts on his final recording, "Come Bless the Lord". Meredith’s first solo album with WLP, completed in June of 2004, is entitled “Come and Go With Me”.

Val Limar-Jansen

Michael Mangan

Mangan Michael Mangan is one of Australia’s foremost contemporary Catholic composers and music liturgists. He worked as a Primary School Music Specialist in Catholic schools in Brisbane for 15 years and has been involved in Parish music ministry since he was in high school. Michael’s 120+ compositions are widely used in schools and parishes throughout Australia, New Zealand and parts of Canada His compositions are known for their vibrant “singability” and suitability for liturgical celebrations. Maggie McCarty

McCarty Maggie McCarty, D.Min. is the President of EPS (Education for Parish Service), a theological school for the laity at Trinity University in Washington, DC. She has been involved in youth ministry training and formation since 1977 and has experience on the parish, diocesan and national levels. Maggie serves as adjunct faculty at Loyola University in New Orleans, St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, and Princeton’s Institute for Youth Ministry. She is a youth ministry volunteer at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Fulton, MD.

Robert J. McCarty

McCarty Robert J. McCarty, D.Min. has been the Executive Director for the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry since 1997. The NFCYM provides networking, resources, conferences and leadership for the development of youth ministry within the Catholic Church. He has been in professional youth ministry since 1973, serving in diocesan, parish, school, and community programs. Bob offers workshops and training programs in ministry skills and issues internationally and serves as adjunct faculty for several Catholic universities. Bob is also a volunteer in his parish youth ministry and catechetical program at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Fulton, MD.

Sr. María Luz Ortíz

Ortiz Sr. María Luz Ortíz, MHSH holds an MA in theology from St. Mary’s University in Baltimore, MD; a BA in Sociology from Loyola College in Baltimore, MD; and different certificates in Catechetics, Youth Ministry, and Parish Ministries. Sr. María Luz has served in the Catechetical field for more than 35 years. She has served in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Columbia, SA, and in various parts of the United States where she has ministered in multicultural communities. Sr. has been a National, Regional, and Diocesan speaker. For the past 6 years she was Vice-President and President of NOCH. Currently, Sr. María Luz is the National Consultant for Catechesis with Hispanics for Harcourt Religion Publishers.

Jorge Rivera

RiveraJorge Rivera, has worked within the Hispanic/Latino community in the Archdiocese of Chicago for many years. Presently he is Coordinator for Hispanic Young Adult Ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Some of Jorge's accomplishments include the organization of three archdiocesan Encuentros (gatherings) that have drawn hundreds, if not thousands, of Latino young people. Other events include the Pascua Juvenil, leadership formation retreats, music workshops and missions for parishes that are in need of beginning pastoral ministry formation with Hispanic young people. Jorge is currently in the process of developing a two-year curriculum of leadership formation in "Pastoral Juvenil." In addition to this curriculum, Jorge also dreams of developing a school of music where Latino young people can grow in and express their artistic talents. Jorge's passion for music and ministry has allowed him to travel to Latin America and many dioceses within the United States. This passion has led him to bring God's message of hope to Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and Ecuador as a speaker and performer. His most recent concert in Cali, Colombia helped raise funds to build homes for homeless families living in the streets of Cali.

Jo Rotunno

Rotunno Jo Rotunno is a seasoned religious educator with over 35 years experience catechizing children, youth, and adults. She serves as Director of Creative Development for RCL · Resources for Christian Living, where her special emphasis is adult faith formation and catechist formation. She also currently serves as RCL Project Director for the Echoes of Faith Plus catechist formation program being created in collaboration with the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership.

Anna Scally

Dr. Michael Steier

SteierDr. Michael Steier originally hails from Louisville, KY. He served
for 20 years as a parish DRE in 4 mid-western parishes, for 5 years as a
Diocesan Director in Camden, NJ and for 3 years as Secretary for
Evangelization and Catechetical Formation in Camden. He is married to
Joyce, and they have 4 young adult children. Since December 2003 he has
served as Assistant Secretary for Catechesis and Leadership Formation at
the USCCB.

Victor Valenzuela

Victor has been in ministry for 20 years including classroom teaching, youth ministry, teacher training, and writing and development of new materials. He has a Bachelor of Arts from St. Joseph Seminary in Menlo Park, CA Born in Arizona to parents of Mexican descent, he is fully bilingual and bicultural.

Janet Vogt

VogtJanet Vogt combines her extensive musical education with more than 20 years of liturgical and teaching expertise. Tom Zanzig

VitaeAfter devoting over 25 years to the development of youth ministry and religious education materials for Saint Mary’s Press, Tom Zanzig is now a freelance writer, trainer, retreat director and speaker in the areas of adult faith formation and spirituality. He recently founded his own consulting and publishing company, Zanzig & Associates. Tom’s work has taken him throughout the U.S. and Canada as well as to Germany, Australia, Singapore and the Arabian Peninsula. The father of two adult children, Tom now lives in Madison, WI with his wife, Peg. All of Tom’s adult faith formation resources are distributed through Silver Burdett Ginn Religion and available at this conference.
