Fr. John Hurley
With Christ-As-Companion:  Forming Disciples for a New Age

Old truths, new forms, unexpected challenges!  Yet one thing is constant for those who share in Christ’s mission, we are not alone.  This keynote will invite formators of disciples to explore how they themselves are nurtured and explore opportunities to celebrate our companionship with Christ and those entrusted to us in His ministry.

Father John Hurley is a Paulist and has a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley.  In 1997, he was appointed to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington, DC. where he served as Executive Director of the Secretariat for Evangelization.   In this capacity, he oversaw ongoing implementation of Go and Make Disciples, A National Plan and Strategy for Catholic Evangelization in the United States.  His vision of a multi-faceted approach to the essential mission of the Church brought about the establishment of the United States Commission on Catholic Evangelization by the Bishops’ Committee on Evangelization in November, 2000. His insights also brought about the North American Institute for Catholic Evangelization for diocesan and national leadership which was held in 2003 and 2006.

Major Address
Rabbi Irwin Kula

Embracing the Sacredness of Building Community

Until very recently most people lived in relatively small, monolithic communities in which serious exposure to different world views, opinions, perspectives and religions was rare.  The truth was the Truth, and there were clear authorities who had the power to determine who was inside and was outside the community.  Today, we are living through an unprecedented historic, psychological and social transformation, especially here in the United States.  Philosophers call this the post-modern era.  Political scientists call this globalization.  Economists call it the post-industrial age or information age.  Some sociologists characterize it as an era of blending and bending, seeking and switching.

This permeability of boundaries affects our very definition of community, our loyalty to community, our capacity to build community, and perhaps, most importantly, the relationships between communities.  In a word, our experience of community has never been messier.  Can our yearning for community be realized in this new context?  Can we embrace the sacred messiness of community?

Rabbi Irwin Kula
A renowned thinker, a provocative religious leader and a respected spiritual iconoclast, Rabbi Irwin Kula is the author of the new book, Yearnings: Embracing the Sacred Messiness of Life (Hyperion, September 2006), and was featured in a public television special in December 2006.
Kula has inspired thousands of people across the country using Jewish wisdom in ways that speak to modern life. A cutting edge scholar, teacher, and rabbi, he brings the insights of an ancient tradition to the challenges of the present to help people live more fully.
Named by both Fast Company magazine and "Religion and Ethics Newsweekly" (PBS) as one of the new leaders shaping the American spiritual landscape, Kula provides a broad vision of religious pluralism.   "The freedom and openness of America invites us to bring our traditions to the marketplace of ideas. The challenge is in translating these wisdoms into American idioms that are accessible to inspire and improve our personal and public lives." No Longer I Who Live: Growing in Identification with Jesus

Where does the path of Christian discipleship take us? St. Paul put it cryptically: "It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me" (Gal. 2:20). But what does THAT mean? In our closing session, through presentation, process, and prayer Tom Zanzig will help us explore that profound question.
